Coffee Enemas

Coffee enemas have been around for a number of years, used in ancient times and were also thought to be used by Florence Nightingale on a regular basis. They were made famous by the Gerson Institute in the 1950’s where coffee enemas were a key treatment used on cancer patients. They were also described in the doctor’s bible The Merick Manual until the 1970’s.

Coffee Enemas are self administered rectally into the colon using a kit comprising of a bag/bucket, clear plastic tube and plastic anal tip (More on how to administer the enema is discussed later). The coffee enema is known to help flush out toxins such as bacteria, heavy metals, fungus and yeast e.g. candida from the digestive tract including the liver and colon. The colon provides a very efficient route to bring therapeutic substances into the body because there is a direct connection between it and the liver.

The caffeine in coffee detoxifies the liver by dilating the haemorrhoidal vein and in turn, the livers portal veins. This opens up the bile ducts and allows the liver to release bile, which contains toxins. The coffee enema must be retained in the gut for at least 15 minutes. All the blood circulating in the body will pass the liver every 3 minutes therefore the entire blood supply passes through the liver 5 times. Doctors at the University of Minnesota showed that coffee administered rectally also stimulates an enzyme system in the liver called glutathione S-transferase (GST) by 600%-700% above normal activity levels. This is a powerful that enzyme scavenges free radicals (which cause cell damage and inflammation) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These neutralized substances become dissolved in the bile, are released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and are excreted through bowel movements.

Drinking coffee orally has nowhere near the same effect as a coffee enema rectally. Where the coffee enema helps the release of toxic bile, drinking coffee can actually cause the body to reabsorb the toxic bile and it is acidic in nature.

The body’s digestive system is complex and any time we introduce a substance such as food or liquid to enter the body, the immune system has to tag it as friendly so that the body does not attack it. It is within the liver that this tagging occurs. Therefore, the quicker a substance arrives at the liver, the quicker it can actually be used by the body.

Regular bowel movements at least once a day are a sign of good health. Constipation can be a sign that there is not enough fibre in the diet which can lead to the slowing down of waste through the colon which can then become stuck in pockets along the colon wall. The waste will then start to ferment making the colon very toxic. These toxins are then reabsorbed back into the body causing the liver to work even harder and when it still can’t eliminate the waste it has to store it somewhere which in turn is gradually poisoning the body.

Coffee enemas can also help a sluggish bowel staying clean and hydrated. Whenever there is a substantial release of toxins into the the blood and lymph system, an enema is the most effective way to carry these toxins out of the body.

A coffee enema can generally be thought of as a form of dialysis of the blood. Dialysis is an artificial method to enhance detoxification, and that is exactly what coffee enemas do since they help the body expel waste materials. They will also peel the top layer of skin or mucous membranes within the digestive which can rejuvenate the digestive tract. Some researchers believe that the top layer of mucous within the gut lining might hold a high level of toxins, and therefore, helping the body shed this lining speeds up the cleansing process.

There are many health benefits to regular coffee enemas, such as:

  • Detoxes and restores liver
  • Improves gut health
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Acts as an anti-inflammatory
  • Increased energy & mental clarity
  • Cleansing of colon
  • Can help reduce pain
  • Eliminates parasites and yeast
  • Improves digestion
  • Increases antioxidant activity
  • Relieves constipation and bloating
  • Reduces pain
  • Cleanses the blood
