Oxygen Therapy

Studies have shown that cancer thrives in a low oxygen environment. It has been found that a deficiency of oxygen metabolism is common to all cancer cells. Oxygen metabolism is the combining of oxygen and fuel such as sugar or fat in a cell to create heat and energy. By breathing, we bring oxygen into the lungs which is then transferred into the bloodstream, combining with haemoglobin in the blood cells. The red blood cells then transport the oxygen around the body to where it is needed. If they are in good number and in good condition then you should have sufficient oxygen being carried in your bloodstream to pass on to your tissues. However, many cancer patients unfortunately have reduced numbers of circulating red blood cells which may also be in a poor condition.

Without sufficient oxygen, rather than the cell being killed off, some cells alter their genetic programming and revert to a different way of producing energy called fermentation. This allows the cell to continue living but is ultimately destructive. Sugar fermentation allows the cells to create enough energy to survive without oxygen and when the loss of energy from oxygen respiration reaches a critical level and fermentation takes over,major changes take place in the way a cell operates and this can start off the cancer process.

The air we breath is mainly made up of a mixture of 78% Nitrogen and and 21% Oxygen. Oxygen therapy is a common treatment to increase the amount of oxygen in normal air to over 90% by removing nitrogen. This can be done using a machine called an oxygen concentrator.

Your body’s cells need oxygen to function. The extra oxygen inhaled stimulates the cells and gives your body the boost it needs. By maximising the amount of oxygen in your red blood cells you increase the level of ATP which is the the body’s energy molecule to fight back.
